Background of the Study
Triage is a critical process in emergency care, involving the assessment and prioritization of patients based on the severity of their conditions. Efficient triage can significantly impact patient outcomes by ensuring that those in the most critical need of care are treated first. Triage training for nurses is essential for improving their ability to respond quickly and accurately during emergency situations (American Heart Association, 2024).
At Federal Medical Centre, Katsina, nurses are regularly involved in triage during emergencies, yet there is a lack of detailed evaluation on how triage training impacts their response efficiency. This study aims to assess the effect of triage training on nurses' ability to respond to emergencies efficiently, thereby improving patient outcomes in critical care situations.
Statement of the Problem
In emergency situations, timely and efficient response is crucial for improving patient survival rates and minimizing complications. Despite triage training being part of the nurses’ routine practice, there is limited evidence on the actual impact of this training on their emergency response efficiency. Nurses may face challenges in effectively implementing triage protocols due to inadequate training, resources, and the high-pressure nature of emergency care.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the impact of triage training on nurses’ emergency response efficiency at Federal Medical Centre, Katsina.
2. To identify the challenges nurses face in applying triage protocols during emergencies.
3. To recommend strategies for improving triage training to enhance nurses’ emergency response efficiency.
Research Questions
1. How does triage training influence nurses’ emergency response efficiency at Federal Medical Centre, Katsina?
2. What challenges do nurses face in applying triage protocols during emergencies?
3. What strategies can improve triage training to enhance nurses’ emergency response?
Research Hypotheses
1. Triage training improves nurses’ emergency response efficiency at Federal Medical Centre, Katsina.
2. Nurses face significant challenges in applying triage protocols, even with training.
3. Targeted strategies and continuous training can enhance nurses’ efficiency in emergency response.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on nurses involved in emergency care at Federal Medical Centre, Katsina, and evaluates the impact of triage training on their response efficiency. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported responses and the exclusion of external factors that could affect emergency care outcomes, such as hospital infrastructure.
